Education: Is Your Classroom Engaged Learner Ready?

(Wed Apr 20th, 2011, by David Meagor)

From the perspective of teaching, teachers have the advantage over their students because they're more experienced learners. Teachers are supposed to possess the skills of looking for the right information in this vast pool of knowledge and shaping that knowledge for meaningful learning. It is important to pass these skills on to our students.

Today's students are going to need the skills of inquiry and research if they're going to learn and consequently be employable someday. Our greatest challenge is to make our students understand that learning new things is not just for the sake of getting a good grade on an exam. This is easier said than done, especially when examination-oriented systems prevail in most of our institutions. But I believe we have to at least try to change their way of thinking.

We have to instill in our students a larger sense of purpose beyond getting good grades on exams. Our kids have to see the importance of developing learning skills that will prepare them for a future wherein greater learning will take place.

It is my belief that our role as educators extends beyond passing on knowledge. Our role is to nurture our students to become lifelong learners, to teach them to "learn how to learn" and to teach them to appreciate and love knowledge. This is essentially what would allow our students to become successful lifelong learners. But before we can achieve this, we have to be honest with ourselves and ask this question – are we a true lifelong learner?

As educators, we have to set examples for our students by becoming lifelong learners ourselves. We need to be up to date with new knowledge, academic ideas and technology. If we want our students to become better learners, we have to become better at what we do. Hence, we should not stay in our comfort zone but push ourselves to grow constantly by challenging and opening ourselves to new skills and knowledge. We can achieve this through a continuous professional development program or through our own initiative to learn by reading, going to workshops, attending short courses and the like.
