Education: Classroom Technology Is Not a Substitute for Teaching

(Tue May 10th, 2011, by Phil Adams-Wright)

Teaching is one of the most difficult jobs in the world but those who are involved in it will say that it is very rewarding.  After all, being able to influence the minds of the future can give any teacher a great deal of satisfaction and pride, which will hopefully help make up for some of the rougher moments.

Of course, all jobs will have positive and negative moments around it, not just teaching but it is fair to say that teaching is a role that many people hold in high regard.  This is why many teachers are concerned about the increasing level of technology that is creeping into the job as they say this is taking away from much of the magic of teaching.  This is certainly not the case though and teachers should embrace these new products and methods as an aid to their teaching methods, as opposed to a substitute.

One of the problems with introducing technology to the classroom is that many teachers are not entirely confident with the technology.  Ironically, the majority of pupils will have an awareness and confidence when using computers and new technology but their teachers may not share the same level of enthusiasm for these products.

This is the first thing that has to be overcome to ensure that technology advances can benefit the classroom.  No one is saying that teachers have to suddenly become gadget fans and have an in-depth understanding of these products but they have to have an awareness and confidence of how to use these machines and how to instruct their pupils in how to use them too.

The thing is, using classroom technology can really aid how a teacher interacts with their class.  A teacher who finds that they struggle to project their voice to the entire room may benefit from using a microphone to speak to the class.  This will give them greater volume and should help them to reach everyone in the room.  This means that a teacher does not have to deviate from their normal tone or speaking voice but can get assistance in reaching more people.

The interactive whiteboard is another piece of classroom technology that can greatly aid a teacher in getting their point across.  These boards can provide visual and audio aids in telling a story or interacting with the pupils, which should be of great benefit in making the lesson come to life.  A good teacher will be able to incorporate these learning methods into their own study plans without too much disruption or fear of feeling like they are being replaced by a machine.  Taking advantage of these products can even make the teaching of trickier subjects simpler and more engaging, something that merely talking about the matter may not have effectively hit home the message.

Interactive whiteboards, or IWB are now becoming more and more prevalent in most educational environments and this type of education technology has helped many people gain a better understanding in their studies.

A Five-Year-Old in Debt: The Instructive Power of Gaming

Video games are usually viewed as a form of escapism: pure entertainment and shoot-em-up fantasy. But increasingly, games are being recognized as educational tools, or as deliverers of social or political messages. This evolving medium is taking on complex environments and issues, and providing a platform for people to explore a world or situation in an interactive way. In this talk Ian Bogost presents the game Animal Crossing, and its instructive qualities. (04:44)
