Education: Classroom Technology Can Raise the Bar for School Children

(Tue May 10th, 2011, by Phil Adams-Wright)

Technology is helping to make life much easier around the home but it can also do the same at school, which is news that teachers, pupils and parents will all be delighted to hear.  It can be difficult to ensure children are developing their mental capabilities in the best possible way and anything which can provide added support for children needs to be considered as a viable measure in the classroom.  As so many school children are completely comfortable with the use of technology in the home, it makes sense that they will be fine with it being used in the classroom and this can help to bring about improved results in their learning.

One of the areas where classroom technology has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years has been with interactive whiteboards.  These have helped bring visual content to life in the classroom, which has had a hugely positive impact on a wide range of subjects.  Anything which captures the imagination of pupils has to be worth considering and the fact that there are learning modules available for every topic imaginable ensures that this method is one of the best for stimulating young minds.

There are many other methods of classroom technology that can help children develop though and a great one is the interactive buzzer system. If a teacher wants to take a straw poll of their class, they would likely ask a question and then ask for a show of hands depending on what the pupils believes the answer to be.  This can lead to some pupils basing their answer on what their friends say or the opinion offered by the pupil they believe to be the most intelligent.  Peer pressure can be a terrible thing at times and a child reacting in this manner can often mask their own level of intelligence or confidence.  This is where the use of hand-held remotes or buzzers can allow a teacher to see what each pupil is thinking.

There is absolutely no peer pressure involved with this scenario because the answers are anonymous to the pupils.  This allows pupils to have a greater degree of confidence in making their own decision and hopefully offering an accurate reflection of what they think.  This is an area where classroom technology can really help a teacher work out who understands the lessons that are being taught in class and who perhaps needs extra assistance.

Student response systems such as those mentioned in this article can really help teachers as well as students to further their educational efforts, educational technology like this is only going to become more useful and prevalent in the future too.

The Reasons Why Interactive Whiteboards Are Being Attacked

1 in 7 classrooms worldwide are predicted to have an interactive whiteboard by the end of 2011, and as the number of classrooms with interactive whiteboards increases, so does the debate over their usefulness. Below I offer a list of the main arguments against IWBs and my responses.
