Education: Classroom Technology Can Appeal to a Wide Range of People

(Tue May 10th, 2011, by Phil Adams-Wright)

Computer and video games are big business today and the vast majority of school children are probably very comfortable with these games and how to use the consoles or computers at home.  This is something that schools should be aware of and implementing a style of education based upon computer games would be no bad thing if it helps to relate the subject matter to a format they are entertained by.

After all, if the learning process can be carried out in a manner that a child understands, it is far more likely to bring about positive results and help to make the information stick in their minds.  Therefore, an educational body or school board should give serious consideration to the use of software programs that can assist the learning process.  The children may feel as though they are playing video games but with education at the core of the game, they will be improving their knowledge along the way.

One of the best ways to use these computer games in class is to combine them with an interactive whiteboard which allows players to get highly involved with the screen and the subject being taught.  The introduction of console games that require players to move and fully interact with the screen or monitor has helped children to develop these interaction skills and using an interactive whiteboard is a great way to harness these skills.

These computer games are available at all levels so even if the whiteboard is to be used for the entire school, there are plenty of games that can be used to promote learning at every possible age group.  If a school has to justify their buying decision, the ability to provide a learning module or game for every age group or subject makes the decision an easier one to make.

Young children will definitely respond well to the bright colours and sounds and any graphical movement when they get an answer right can be very encouraging.  Children respond well to praise after doing something right and this is where a video game can be very reassuring in developing confidence and knowledge.  Young children will especially want to see the action after a right answer time and time again, so this will subconsciously create a desire to get the answer right.

As children progress in age, video content can be introduced to these games to make it more stimulating and to promote further awareness.  This video content can still provide a strong level of interaction and should be of great value in getting a story across or stimulating debate and discussion between pupils.

Interactive whiteboards are one of the main and most prominent developments in technology in the classroom that have helped to make education more engaging and fun for students of all ages.

The Reasons Why Interactive Whiteboards Are Being Attacked

1 in 7 classrooms worldwide are predicted to have an interactive whiteboard by the end of 2011, and as the number of classrooms with interactive whiteboards increases, so does the debate over their usefulness. Below I offer a list of the main arguments against IWBs and my responses.
