What is eLearning?
eLearning refers to the delivery of a learning, training or education program by electronic means. It involves the use of a computer or electronic device to deliver the instructional content and provide training or learning. Such devices include personal computers, CD / DVD ROMs / PDA / Pocket PC and Mobile Phones. Communications technology enables the use of the Internet, email, discussion forums etc for learning.
eLearning covers a wide set of applications and processes such as Web-based training (WBT), Computer-based training (CBT), Virtual classrooms and Digital collaboration.
eLearning can be classified into three major categories:
Asynchronous learning
Synchronous learning
Blended learning
Asynchronous learning
This type of learning involves self-paced learning, CD-ROM-based, Network-based, Intranet-based or Internet-based. It may be totally self-contained with links to reference materials in the place of a live instructor.
Synchronous learning
Synchronous learning is done in live with a virtual instructor facilitating the training. Everyone logs in at a set time and can communicate directly with the instructor and with each other virtually. This type of training usually takes place via the Internet, Audio or Video-conferencing, Internet telephony, or even two-way live broadcasts to students in a classroom.
Blended learning
It is a combination of traditional and electronic learning. Options for blended learning go beyond the classroom. People can seek the information that they need, when they need it to enhance classroom knowledge. Some examples are combination workshops, coaching sessions, support groups, online classes and performance support tools.
