Breaking up is never easy so don't be too hard on yourself!
Don't break up with someone over the phone
You should never break up with someone over the phone or by text. Always do it face to face. Whilst it's difficult hurting the other persons feelings they deserve to be told in person. Think about how you would like to be treated if someone was breaking off a relationship with you.
Ensure friends and family aren't present
It can be really hurtful and embarrassing for the other person if you tell them that you are breaking up, whilst around other people. This can lead to resentment or even loathing towards you which is not good for either of you. Give them some privacy. The only time that you should ensure another person is around is if the person you are breaking up with has been violent or overly controlling towards you. In this case it's good to have someone else there for your own safety.
Don't tell others why you broke up
The next worst thing to finding that someone has broken up with you, is discovering that everyone else knows why it happened. If someone asks why you broke up just reply "It didn't work out." After all if others discover that you have been gossiping after breaking up with someone, they might think twice about going out with you in the future and you will most certainly lose their respect.
Arrange to go out with friends on the day you break up
When you have broken up with someone, arrange to go out with friends so that you don't end up feeling sad or upset the rest of the day. There's nothing like time with friends for helping you take your mind off problems.
Throw out music that reminds you of your ex
Often there will be a favourite song, album or artist that will remind you of the person you broke up with, aim to get rid of these CD's or delete them from your IPOD or MP3 player. That way playing that music won't remind you of the relationship.
Stop going to your previous hangouts
If there were particular places that you and you ex used to go to together, try to avoid going have a change of venue. Memories are often triggered by places you have been to.
Above all think about how you would prefer to be treated if someone was breaking off a relationship with you.
