Copywriting: Choosing The Right Thank You Card Wording

(Wed May 4th, 2011, by Sandy Rutherforde)

Everyone appreciates when someone gives them a gift or does something nice for them, but many times they are left wondering exactly how they should express their appreciation. Of course, a thank you card is always in order and certainly appreciated by the receiver. However, knowing the proper thank you card wording has many people struggling for what to say as they struggle to find the right words to express their feelings.

Of course, the exact wording should come from the heart and is something that will vary depending on the relationship of the giver and receiver. For example, the thank you card wording that you use for a business associate will be entirely different than what you would send to a close friend or family member. However, there are some basic etiquette rules that should be followed. These rules can help guide you in writing your note of appreciation no matter what the situation.

The first rule you should keep in mind is that the card should be sent as soon as possible after receiving a gift or some type of favor or kind deed. Waiting too long sends the message that you have forgotten, or perhaps were not pleased or grateful for the other person's thoughtfulness. You should strive to get your cards out within a week if at all possible. Of course, if you received flowers or a gift while in the hospital or during some other difficult situation, it is certainly understandable when an immediate response is not received.

When it comes to finding the right wording, the most important thing is to make it something that comes from your heart. If you do not know the person well, or if it is a more formal situation, such as a job interview, you still need to make it personal. Be sure to specifically mention the gift or gesture that you are thanking the person for. If it is a gift, it is nice to let them know how you will use it, such as "the black leather gloves fit perfectly and I'm anxious to wear them with my new winter coat."

You should also address the person by name, but of course, use the proper title if it is a formal occasion. By making the thank you card wording personal, you make it seem more sincere and not just a generic card that everyone received. It is always nice to receive a note of appreciation and know that your gift or thoughtful gesture was truly appreciated.

One final point to keep in mind is that no matter how much you struggle with writing a card, it is much better to send out your cards expressing your sincere appreciation, even if it isn't perfectly written, than to procrastinate and not get them sent at all.
