Business: The ABC’s of Writing Press Releases when Starting a Dollar Store

(Mon Jan 25th, 2010, by Bob B Hamilton)

It is essential for those starting a dollar store to keep the word out there about their store and all significant changes that are taking place.  Information to communicate includes details of your upcoming grand opening and other scheduled events, employee promotions and other significant changes in personnel, the arrival of new products, the addition of new services, and much more.  In fact the better you do at informing prospective shoppers about your store and changes that have occurred, the greater the traffic you will likely find in your store.  Paid advertising in the local newspaper and on radio or television can have significant impact on the traffic and dollar store sale levels.  Yet one of the most powerful actions you can take is often free.  That action is to create press releases and submitting them to you local newspaper.  In this article I present the ABC’s of writing dollar store press releases.

Fortunately writing a press release is fairly easy.  It doesn’t require a college degree in literature or writing to create a dollar store press release that will do the job for your business.  When starting a dollar store build writing press releases into your plans for every major business change or event that occurs.

· Start with an outline.

Place all the key messages down on paper.  Make sure to include the facts and details you want to share.  Be sure your outline includes details about what is the message, why it is significant, when it occurred/occurs, who is involved, and other important details.

· Headlines must grab the reader’s attention.

Your headline must seize reader attention and then draw them in to actually start reading the details revealed in your dollar store press release.  It should include the most important information.  Make it short and to the point.

· The 1st paragraph must provide the basics.

The 1st paragraph is the most significant paragraph you will write.  It should be an overview of the entire press release.  It needs to include all of the most important points found in the press release.  Today’s readers are busy.  They may only have time to read the 1st paragraph so it must provide enough information and details to either keep readers reading or to place your business name in their memory.

· Add key points in subsequent paragraphs

Place the information in order of importance.  The most important information goes in the 2nd paragraph.  The next most important information goes in the 3rd paragraph. Continue presenting information in descending order until all major points have been covered in your dollar store press release.

To your success when starting a dollar store!
