Opel and Peugeot are two of Europe's most environment-conscious automobile manufacturers. It is not surprising that both these carmakers have undertaken earnest efforts to produce vehicles that are not only fuel-efficient, but spew far lesser emissions. Opel, for instance, has utilized an Opel Catalytic Converter for all its automobiles. The GM-owned European auto company is, in fact, the world's first car manufacturer to provide all of its vehicles with catalytic converters. Peugeot, on the other hand, is universally recognized as a leader in developing solutions to reduce emissions of petrol and diesel particulates. To reduce pollution, both Opel and Peugeot focus their action on four principal areas of action. First is the use of fuel feed arrangements, and of precise and consistently stable ignition. Second, hydrocarbons are recycled from the sump gases. Third, petrol vapors are efficiently absorbed from the fuel tank. Lastly, and perhaps the most important one, unburnt pollutants are reduced with the help of an Opel Catalytic Converter or Peugeot Catalytic Converter.
Catalytic converters are much more complex than just saying it reduces emissions. The catalytic chamber comprises a stainless steel outer case, thermal insulation and a honeycomb element impregnated with precious metals (the active catalysts) such as platinum and rhodium. On contact with the precious metals, a chemical reaction converts the pollutants to less toxic gases. The active material (platinum and rhodium) uniquely serves to improve this chemical reaction, hence the name catalytic converter.
