We all know how a long commute feels, as the majority of us will have to sit in traffic on our travel to or from work at some point in the week. but it seems that even though the cost of fuel and car maintenance is rising, as Brits we spend more time in a year driving our cars then out socialising with our friends and family.
On average, the British motorist worryingly clocks up enough miles to drive from London to Cape Town in South Africa, meaning that in a lifetime we spend an average of three years in the car. We spend around ten hours in the working week in the car, as opposed to four point six seeing the people we love.
But there is a difference in the sexes as to how we feel about driving. We ladies don't mind getting behind the wheel, and some even go as far as to say that they find it relaxing, whereas the majority of men hate to drive and see it as a means to an end in terms of financial strain and time to get to their place of work. Men spend around thirty extra hours in the car on their commutes, and are statistically more likely to go on one off trips and weekends away, whereas women favour driving too and from work as their main driving in the week. Men are more likely to drive for work too, as they spend twenty nine hours a year behind the wheel on business. Women spend ninety one hours in the car on route to shopping trips on a yearly basis!
In terms of when in the year is seen to be the busiest, August yields the highest driving figures. Although schools are out and so the commute in the morning is a little less congested, people are favouring weekends away in the UK, as the country really comes into itself as the sun starts to shine, which starts to clock the miles up.
