The first step to creating an online presence is starting a site. After that, you need to figure out the best time to come up with revenue generators, to wit, affiliate program ads.

Timing one the web is a subject that comes up over and over. Simply put, there are better times to do certain things in the evolution of a site. When you just start out, you might have a site that has only four or five pages. In that case, it probably is not a good move to go out and pay money for traffic. Why? Well, you don’t have much to offer visitors, so you return on investment is probably not going to be to good.

So, when should you add affiliate links to a website? There is no clear “correct” answer to the question. Don’t you just hate that? Well, let’s look at some common situations and answers.

The first situation often has a simple answer. The affiliate program you join may have a minimum traffic requirement. Before you can add affiliate links, the program may require that you have 100 or more visitors a day. Remember, visitors are each person coming to your site, not hits. Hits are how many times a page in your site is accessed. A single visitor might access twenty pages. Regardless, make sure you comply with minimum traffic requirements as your starting point to placing links on your site.

The second situation is even easier. The time to add affiliate links on your website is immediately. If the program allows it, why not? You might only have a small number of visitors coming to the site each day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make some money off of them. Now, keep in mind you should never evaluate an affiliate program when you only have ten or twenty visitors a day. Even the best affiliate programs only convert at a rate of one transaction per 70 to 150 visitors. If you don’t get a sale in two days with a total of 40 visitors, it doesn’t mean the affiliate program is good or bad. It just means you don’t have enough traffic to make a determination.

So, what should you do? We have a couple hundred sites and pretty much add affiliate links as soon as possible unless the program doesn’t allow for it. Do we get a lot of sales immediately? No, but we get the process moving.
