LiNKS Sign Language and Interpreting Services has just announced that it would be using web conferencing to deliver VRI (Video Remote Interpreting) services. VRI offers sign language interpreting services to deaf individuals using video and web conferencing solutions when an interpreter is not able to be physically present.
VRI services can be used in a number of situations including corporate medical educational governmental, entertainment conventions and religious organizations whether in recreational settings or complex work environments said Chuck Scarpaci Director of LiNKS.
Effective VRI communication can now be accomplished anywhere there is access to a PC webcam and an internet connection Chuck Scarpaci added.
Since 1999 LiNKS has been providing interpreting sign language services to many individuals organizations private and public corporations and departmental agencies.
In the United States it is estimated that between 2 and 4 people in every 1000 are considered deaf though only less than 1 in 1000 became deaf before completing 18 years old. However people with a severe hearing impairment are between 9 and 22 in every 1000. This means that there are in the United States around 600000 deaf people and about 6000000 reported having a lot of trouble hearing according to a NHIS survey.
