I will start this article by giving you an over view of my back ground.
I was born in Andover England In 1950, 2 months after my birth, my mother found out that I was blind, and I would never be able to see anything, (according to the doctors,)
Six months later, I was sitting in a stroller, and dropped a rattle over the side, and looked down to see where it went. Yes I could see, not much, but I could see, I was still blind in my left eye, but had partial vision in my right eye, about 50%., but still a miracle.
Now you say, what does this have to do with bullying? well actually quit a lot.
You see in 1957 my parents decided to move to Canada, I had to be sponsored by
my grandfather because the Canadian Government thought that I would never be
able to look after myself, and would be dependent on the government for money to live.
So we moved to Canada, actually Windsor On.. were I started to attend
Victoria Public School, I was put in the SIGHT SAVING CLASS, for children with
limited vision. right beside my class room there was a class for the deaf
And that is where the story begins.
For The first few years everything was fine, we laughed and
played, had fun.
When I reached grade 4, and became more integrated with
the rest of the school population, things began to change,
and so did I.
I witnessed kids in my class being kicked, punched, spat on.
and called some nasty names, I was called, blindie one eye,
and the best of all f*** eyes. This kind of crap continued
until I reached grade 6, I was going home with black eyes,
and bruises on a regular bases. When my mom would ask what
happened? I would just say "I fell or walked into a door".
I could not tell the truth, scared of the repercussions I would
face back at school.
Then one day a kid in grade 8 pushed me, I went mental, I grabbed
him by the back of the neck and slammed his head into a locker
door, splitting his head wide open,
From that day I became the one to turn to when kids in my class,
or in the class for the deaf were being picked on.
But even that was not enough, remember I also had poor vision,
so for me to get my ass kicked was very possible, in fact happened
many times.
So how did we stop this madness? we all banded together as a group,
and no longer faced the bullies alone, you see there is power in numbers
as soon as one of us were being picked on, we were all there in a matter
of seconds. After a time the bullies backed off, and left us alone.
I left school when I finished grade 8, not wishing to go through
any more abuse, and that was sad, you see I wanted to be
a teacher and teach others with poor vision.
Things are much different today, kids carry guns, and knives.
So I recommend if this kind of thing is happening to you.
contact the authorities, and get help, before it gets worse.
Children are committing suicide because they are being bullied to
the extent that they don't want to live any more.
This is so wrong, and so sad,
If you are being bullied, or know someone who is
please contact the local authorities in your area
and put a stop to it to day.

about bullying.
